College of Medicine and Health Science

General Information

The past several decades have brought about a number of changes in medical education resulting from the introduction of newer technology into the educational process. The newest arrival to the changes brought about by technology is the use of the Internet in medical education.

CME by definition consists of educational activities that serve to maintain, develop, or increase the knowledge, skills, and professional performance and relationships a physician uses to provide services for patients, the public, or the profession. The Online CME is a way to earn CME credits, over the Internet, using your computer from home or office.

What is e-Learning?

E-Learning is the delivery of educational (whether academic or professional) content via all electronic media available today, including the internet, intranets, extranets, satellite, broadcast, video, interactive TV and CD Rom. E-learning encompasses all learning undertaken, whether formal or informal, through electronic delivery.

What is Online Learning?

Online Learning is a division of e-Learning involving delivery of educational content via a network such as World Wide Web (Internet) or an internal network within a corporation or an organization (Intranet).

What is Virtual Education?

The term education implies a learning environment in opposition to "learning" which does not necessarily entail learners to be part of a wider setting created for the sole purpose of "learning". University campuses are the most common example of these environments. They include classrooms, libraries, laboratories, recreational areas, etc. as well as administrative offices, such as admissions, registrar, student services, finance, etc.

Virtual Education is literally based on the same concept, however, via the Internet. In other words, Virtual Education can be considered as the latest and most advanced generation of Online and/or e-Learning.

Virtual Education involves discussion forums and different types of collaboration tools, such as Virtual Classrooms, which are online meeting places where students and professors based anywhere around the globe can meet at the same time. Tools are available to make these classes as alive and interactive, as regular face-to-face classes. A detailed description of Virtual Classrooms is available some where else.

The most important and significant advantage of Virtual Education over e- Learning is the presence of a faculty to teach and track learners’ progress all through the learning process. Faculty are available to provide support and tutoring online, either instantly in chat rooms or Virtual Classrooms and/or asynchronously by email or postings in discussion forums.
